Is your box soft or hard modded? What dashboard do you have installed? Did it just start doing that?

Sounds like a DVD drive prob.

I can tell you it is probably soft modded.
Hard modded would mean that you actually have a mod chip installed.

It may be set up to dual boot.
I use UnleashX as primary dash and when I boot with the disc drive open, It boots to XBMC.

If you use a file browser to peek into your dash folder, and you see a file called ALTDASH, then you are set up to dual boot.

Sometimes when these dvd drives go bad they throw the system into that Error screen. But then most of the time if you are modded, your system will try to go on without it. (To an Extent)
You see when you boot the xbox it sends a signal to the dvd drive, the drive then responds with both a signal and eventually disc data. The xbox is designed to play game discs not really to run a dash. The dash gets the boot signal only when there is no disc or the door is open.

Ultimately I think you are having a disc drive problem.

Be careful.

I have seen this before on hdds that were about to fail.

BACK-UP YOUR DATA NOW!!! If you haven't stored your eeprom, do it now.

If you have your eeprom backed up and your drive crashes are you able to take a clean HD and set it up so that it would work in the old XBox?

Sure would!

That Eeprom is ESSENTIAL, if you want to change your hard drive.

Without the eeprom, if your hard drive crashes, you have a big black paperweight.

Only easy if you're good at stuff like that.

have friends that I guarantee would screw up a solderless application.

But yes, a mod chip would be an alternative, but as I stated before,
It's easier and ultimately cheaper to buy a used xbox for $25-$45, and just keep your old one for spare parts. Any good xb DVD drive alone is worth that much. And If your any good at soldering... You would have some extra RAM chips to add to your new one.

I used to install modchips back in the day for 10 bucks. But yeah, a new xbox, and then ask someone to install ram chips from your old into your new one, if it's a 1.0-1.5 that is.

So how about a little tutorial here Masked... Lets say your HD crashes and you have your eeprom backed up on a memory card. What procedure would you go through to get a new one up and running?

this is a little off topic but how long is a factory XBOX dvd drive supposed to last? and what might be some ways to increase the life of it?

There is no set life... As with any electronic gadget, they can go at any time, there are better brands than others, I say this because Xbox used several different brands of Dvd drives.

Cleanliness is the key! (To long Laser life that is)
99% of the time if your drive is giving constant dirty disc errors... it is either because of a dirty laser or just a worn defective laser.
A laser will operate hotter and at a higher intensity and therefore "Burn Out" much faster if the lens is cloudy or dirty dusty.

So clean the lens. Take your drive apart and use a qtip and a little rubbing alcohol and clean your lens.
ESPECIALLY if you have pets or are a smoker... Then you should be doing so more often.

And don't use those crappy Cd/DVD laser cleaning discs. They are junk... not only do they not work, but the bristles on the brushes can actually scratch your lens and make your problems worse. Take it apart and use a cotton swab as described above,,, you will get it much cleaner, and with the cotton swab you shouldn't be able to scratch the lens.

i have a question and it is also off of subject. can i put a samsung dvd drive in a 2002 xbox? i have a 05 and a 02. but the older 02 wont play as many games do to the crappy drive. i have cleaned it alredy using the qtip meathod. so it has to be the drive. so i did a little looking and found that the samsung was a better drive. but are they all compatible? and where do i find the version?

The brand of the dvd drive does not matter. To my knowledge all xbox versions will work with any xbox dvd drive. I prefer Toshiba/Samsung myself. As far as the Xbox DVD drives go... they are the most reliable I have seen. (Besides their little drive sticking problem, but that is easily fixed just by remembering to always leave a disc in the drive.)

You can always take the drive apart and replace the laser for $10-$20 bucks. Then you wont have to worry about it being picky about the games it wants to play.
