This DVD will install XDSL and all the files needed to run Windows 98se on your Xbox. You need about 1.5 GB of space left on your E  partition for this install.This installer is a pimped out hddprep v1.4 and hats off to the original people involved. It will install all the files for you and "Linux XDSL / 98Lite" will appear in your apps directory in your Dash(es). This DVD will not over write existing files on the E:\ or any other partition (except files associated with this install) This DVD will not format any partitions or over write any ini xml type files on other partitions. If you already have XDSL installed on E:\ just delete it as these are the latest files, but the DVD should over write them ok, also delete any 98lite or associated files that you may have on your xbox hard drive. Burn this (x)iso to a DVD that your xbox rom tray likes using Nero or your favorite pc burning tool at 4X max. and finalize the DVD (either DVD+R or DVD-R will read on all 3 types of xbox roms) Boot the flashed TSOP or modchipped xbox with the DVD in the rom tray. Choose yes to install and it takes about 5~10 minutes. Turn off xbox through menu, then restart xbox with the eject button and remove install DVD from tray. To run Windows 98se after the install, Run XDSL, labelled "Linux XDSL / 98Lite", from the apps directory in your Dash Choose the fatx e:\ option and XDSL will boot. (XDSL itself is a fully working Linux, internet ready, app packed xbox o/s) Once XDSL is running, double click on the XTerminal icon on the upper right desktop. Using the keyboard type sh /cdrom/98.sh and hit the return button (a space between sh and /cdrom/98.sh!) Windows 98 will boot (just hit ok or cancel when asked for a windows password) Flashfxp is installed to connect to your pc file server for file transfers to win 98 itself or to other ftp file servers on-line IE and mozilla web browsers and a on-screen keyboard is installed, if you don't have a USB keyboard plugged into a controller port (also support for a mouse) Runs about the speed of a P1 To shutdown windows 98, shut down win98 through the Start button like a normal pc then to shut down XDSL right click or red button on controller on the desktop then choose "shut down" XDSL will properly shut down the xbox. Do your shutdowns like this, just don't hit the power button because files may corrupt for XDSL or Win98 and if they do just re-install with the DVD again to start fresh Basically "XDSL" is being used as the "emulator" which "runs" the "win98 o/s" files. |

| ok I didnt upload this ,but yes this will work on a soft mod, if you do not want to risk your files heres what you do, download the newest xdsl (its.07 beta) follow the instructions you want to do a loop install or you will nuke drives(make sure you dont have anything but your controller plugged in or it will not work) after you have xdsl installed extract the win98.img , qemu directory, ftp them to E. open notepad on your pc and paste this into it #!/bin/bash echo Loading Windows 98... -m.e sudo mnt/hda50/qemu/qemu -L mnt/hda50/qemu/ -m 16 -hda mnt/hda50/win98.img -full-screen -enable-audio save it as 98.sh and ftp to E to boot mount you E drive (theres a little program on the bar in xdsl last option on the right) open bash also on the bar then type sh /mnt/hda50/98.sh | ||

| i installed this it didnt effect anything negetivly.it just gets stuck on a screen that looks kind of like windows with widgets on the right side of the screen a keyboard on top and a taskbar on the bottom and some icons but thats as far as it goes.its probably because i have 3rd party wireless controllers and not a microsoft anyone else have this problem? | ||

| Works fine, Doesn't nuke anything. Pretty cool but runs really slow. Thinking about upgrading my ram to see if it makes it run a bit smoother. Major Kudos to the person/people that creates these progs and makes them run on the xbox. Kudos also to the uploader | ||

| wow man so glad im on this site, thing is i tried linux on my softmod, nuked it but i had an issue with it unlocking my hd after install and i simply had to relock/reinstall from my xbox hd disc i made for my xboxs, im gonna try it hope it works. also one thing ive learned i make a xboxhd dics for every xbox i mod so i never have an issue like i did before, had to hotswap the bastards lol kiddos to the developers | ||

if this is running windows as a guest on linux; wouldnt it be more practical to run windows as a virtual machine on the linux host?  I'm going to go try each; I'll let you know!

Hi, ok this was giving me an issue due to simple error, here is the fix:
Download xdsl 0.7 beta 5 (Xdsl0.7beta0.05.iso) install to loopback  n E: with a swap file on E: (i suggest 896mb for loopback and 128mb for swap file this allows all builtin upgrades to be installed and leaves room for open office, use 2.0.4 uci from MyDSL repositories, and a few other apps) After Xdsl is installed and upgraded to the point you want, EXIT XDSL and go to XBMC dash, use an FTP app to Transfer the Win98.img and the Qemu folder to the ROOT of E: Drive on Xbox. NOW HERE IS THE BIG ISSUE>>> on your pc open notepad and paste this in EXACTLY as is:
#!/bin/bash
echo Loading Windows 98... -m.e
sudo /mnt/hda50/qemu/qemu -L /mnt/hda50/qemu/ -m 24 -hda /mnt/hda50/win98.img -full-screen -enable-audio
Save this file as "ALL FILES TYPE" named 98.sh and then.check that explorer says its an "SH" file type then FTP this to the ROOT of E: drive on xbox. Then run xdsl and in an Xterminal type: "sh /mnt/hda50/98.sh" without the quotations and hit enter now win98 should start up, exit win98 via "shutdown" as normal to go back to xdsl. I hope this helps!! PS: **note the -m 24 - is the amount of memory win98 will see and you can change it as you like, some people report 40mb will work on a stock xbox upto 104mb on an xbox with 128mb of ram****,

| ANYONE that can find out how to make a new image of win98 (the win98.img for qemu) that has the final versions of IE and FireFox (and perhaps Opera) web browsers for Windows 98SE (old versions will give "last version for win 98se for MANY apps) and the last version of MSN messenger. This would be Great, also can anyone "write" files to the win 98 "C: drive" i have not tried alot as i only have a softmod 64mb xbox so its a little slow, but when i try to download with firefox i get greyed out options to "save to disk" or "open with" . Well that finishs my posting/updating info on Win98se on XDSL via qemu, i hope it helped some people and PLEASE ANY ONE THAT CAN.. KEEP UPDATING THIS SO IT KEEPS GETTING BETTER, also off topic please someone make an XBMC app to read simple text, word doc's and pdf's, thanks a ton | ||
