Xubuntu for the Xbox This is a file download for Xubuntu, which is Ubuntu created for the Xbox. I primarily use Ubuntu on my PC at home and is my OS system of choice. I also use windows 7, but I primarily use windows 7 when I am networking my Xbox. Xubuntu basically turns your Xbox into a PC with a powerful operating system. I consider myself a Linux user more so than a windows user, so when I discovered you could install Ubuntu on an Xbox, I was all over it! You can either run this ISO from cd-r on your Xbox or you can FTP it to your hard drive. One drawback to the OS is you have to have a keyboard and mouse hooked up to your Xbox in order to use it. The OS is not compatible with an Xbox controller, but well worth it to splice and solder some wires together to make your own Xbox keyboard and mouse to use it. Enjoy. |

| Thanks nightwatchx. I've never used ubuntu but this should certainly be an interesting way to check it out. Do I need a mouse AND keyboard, or can I get by messing around with just a mouse to start? I only have 1 USB port(hardmod) at the moment but I could rig a wire for a second one easy enough. | ||

| I would suggest to have both a mouse and keyboard. Truthfully, you won't get very far just using a mouse. | ||

| Actually, you can, there is an OSD keyboard, but I don't remember how to get to it. I used Ubuntu for 5 years (since 5.04). Forced to switch to Windows because I acquired a computer with an ATI card, and this version of ATI Linux doesn't play nice with. But, Ubuntu would be a very nice first time use experience. I recommend this to anybody curious about Linux. | ||

| This is version 9.04 and I am not for sure, but I don't think you can run the PC version of Ubuntu on a Xbox. It does not contain the default.xbe file needed to execute the program on the Xbox. | ||

| Thats the same exact setup I run on my PC and I like it a lot. Ubuntu is just a way more efficient OS. I mean it freaking spell checks everything, even this comment box.Not to mention runs a whole lot faster than Windows 7. As far as the keyboard goes, I used a cheap o usb key board and mouse just because of the fact that the Xbox ports are basically just usb ports. You can find tuts on the web on how to do this. | ||

| What happens when the linux text loads up, and it hangs on "Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init"? I've tried it on several different Xboxes and I get the same message | ||

| Truthfully, I would not try to use a wireless keyboard. I would go with a cheap usb key board and mouse . That way if you mess up no big deal. All it takes is a matter of splicing the wires and soldering the correct color wires together, leaving the yellow alone. As far as drivers go you may run into a problem if you use a wireless keyboard and mouse. | ||

| I have no idea about the Linux text hanging and saying "Kernel Panic: Attempted to kill init". Does it not load to the OS? Is anyone else having this problem? | ||

| Well I did a lot of research on it, and I couldn't find any sources with the same problem, except for one guy that asked the same question, and no one answered it lol. It loads up a few streams of the linux text, then pauses at "Kernel Panic ..." and doesn't move. I've tried launching it under NTSC mode, even launching it through the shortcut, as well as the actual .xbe file, same problem. I'll try to redownload it, it might be simply a problem on my part. Thanks a bunch for sharing this! |

| Same problem. But I forgot that I've been told 1.6v Xboxes (what I have) have issues with Linux no? I know I had issues running Xmugen because of this. | ||

| 1.If you ftp it to your xbox you will get the Kernel Panic problem, so burn the iso file to a dvdr/cdr disk. 2.After burning the iso file to disk put the disk in xbox tray turn off the xbox and turn it on with disk still in tray. 3.when you get to main dash user name is "live" password is "live". 4.Your logged in enjoy..... | ||

| Yeah, I have a keyboard and mouse, actually, my wireless keyboard work with this... I haven't tried my wireless mouse yet, I used a wired one, but I have 'wireless keyboard and mouse receiver', and I tried the keyboard, it works flawlessly for me lol | ||

| So simply solder together the four matching colours ,(the Xbox cable uses 4 colors: Red, Blue, Green, White. Some USB cables use 4 Colors: Red, Black, Green, and Blue. Use the following as a reference. If only one wire is a different color, then leave it for last, and connect it to the remaining wire (not the yellow!) Red -> Red Green -> Green Blue -> Black White -> White) keep the yellow LP (LightPen) wire unconnected. Hope this helps | ||

| Is there a way to get this to work on the hard drive? If so, would it be possible to upgrade to 10.04 LTS? Or perhaps 10.10? | ||

| I'm gonna have to try this out. Anyone use it on an HDTV over Component cables yet? I have issues with "resolution not supported" on my TV with most linux for xbox discs. 9.04? sweet, I think this may be the most current Linux disc so far for the xbox, everything else I've seen is from years and years ago. | ||

| It's been so long since I've tried to put linux on my xbox....I recall sometihing about the kernel.... 2.4 supported FATX, but 2.6 didn't. So we were stuck with an old kernel. As this is 9.04, does it run a 2.6 kernel? is it able to run in a loopback off the HDD? can it mount/read/write the FATX partitions? | ||
