Key Terms:
----------------
.iso - is an archive file (also known as a disc image) of an optical disc, composed of the data
contents of every written sector of an optical disc, including the optical disc file system. It's
basically an exact copy or picture of what the original manufacture disc looked liked, all in a single
file. These ISO images can be created from optical discs, or can be used to recreate optical discs
using software from many software vendors. (Nero, Alcohol 120%, ImgBurn, etc...)
These .iso images will vary in size, depending on game content. Some will be as large as 3-4GB, others are as small as 100-300MB. It really just depends on the game.
.xiso - is an archive file of an XBOX game. There really is no difference betweeen an .xiso and .iso.
Someone just thought it would be cool to add an X to the front of the file extension noting that it's
an image of an Xbox game.
ZXBTools - This pc software program will do lots of cool Xbox stuff.
1) It can make mutli discs where you can put several smaller xbox games into a single .iso image.
It's kind of like making an xbox mix tape of some of your favorite games.
(This is not covered in this tutorial.)
2) It can extract/ un-pack .iso images to usable hard drive content, or create / pack .iso images from
useable hard drive content.
What we need:
---------------------
ZXBTools 1.6a - [url=http://www.xboxisozone.com/downloads/538/zxbtools16a.html]Downloadable Here" class="submit">[link]
An .iso of an XBox Game.
Myth:
-------
You can just ftp the .iso image files directly to your xbox console and they will play.
Fact:
------
The xbox does not understand the .iso image standard. You need to have these .iso images extracted before you can play the games directly from the XBOX hard drive. Hence the need for this tutorial.
Tutorial:
-------------
Difficulty Level: 1-Easy
-------------------------------
Step 1 - Prep the folder
-------------------------------
Create a Folder on your PC. I normally use the Game Name as the Folder Name.
Ultimately, this will be the folder that we ftp to the Xbox, as it will have the game in it.
Example: G:\Sega GT Online\
Step 2 - Prep the iso
----------------------------
Place your .iso image inside of this folder.
Example: G:\Sega GT Online\SegaGTOnline.iso
Step 3 - Start the utility
------------------------------
Launch ZXBTools
Step 4 - Configuration the Extraction
-------------------------------------------------
From the ISO Menu at the Top, Choose Extract.
This opens up the ZXBTools [Extract ISOs] Menu
Step5 - Select an iso image
--------------------------------------
To add an .iso image, click on the Add xISO button.
From here we are going to add ISOs to the list of ones that we want extracted.
This utility allows us to extract more than 1 iso image at at a time.
This is simply a time saving feature. If you are like me, and you have several Xbox games in .iso
format, you can queue up 5 or 10 at once, and let ZXBTools do all of the work for you at once.
They do not have to be done 1 at a time.
The standard Windows file selection diaglog box will open.
On the top Menu Bar it should say [Select ISO]
We need to navigate to the folder and the iso image that we created in Step 1 & 2
Example: G:\Sega GT Online\SegaGTOnline.iso
Once you have selected the .iso image, click the OK button.
Step 6 - Select a Destination
---------------------------------------
This will immediately open the [Choose Destination] dialog menu.
From here we need to pick a folder where we want the contents of the .iso extracted to.
I always just pick the same folder the .iso file is in. It keeps it simple that way.
If you want to put it in another folder you can. If the folder doesn't already exists, you can create
a folder at that time by clicking on the "Create Folder" button in the menu.
Example: G:\Sega GT Online\
Once you have the folder selected, press the OK button.
This will return you to the ZXBTools [Extract ISOs] menu.
You will now see that iso has been added to the list of isos that are to be extracted.
You will also see 4 pieces of information displayed about your iso.
The name of the Game, The location of the iso image, the destination of the extraction, and the size.
If you want to add additional .iso images to this batch to process, repeat steps 5-6 again.
When you are ready to start the extracting move ahead to Step 7.
Step 7 - Verification
--------------------------
Before you start the extraction, you will want to verify that your iso and destination folders are
correct. You can also check the file size. The larger the file sizes, the longer it will take to extract.
This step is just a precautionary measure to make sure you have everything configured correctly before we begin.
If something is configured incorrectly, perhaps you choose the wrong destination folder, you can
click on the game in the list, and then click on the "Delete" button. This will remove that item from
the list, and then you can re-add it to the list following the steps listed above.
If everything is configured incorrectly, you can click the "Delete All" button. This will remove all
items from the list, and you will have to add them all again, following the steps listed above.
When you are ready to begin the extraction, click on the Extract ISOs button.
Step 8 - Extraction
-------------------------
This will start the extraction.
You will see progress indicators letting you know where you are at in the process.
The top indicator is where you are at on the current iso you are extracting in terms of being done.
The bottom indicator is where the overall batch is at in terms of being done.
If you are only doing 1 iso image, both indicators will progress at the same rate.
In the lower left hand corner of the window, it will display witch iso in the list it is currently
extracting.
Be patient as this process will take some time.
Estimate is about 1 minute / 1000 MB of data to extract.
Step 9 - Extraction Complete
---------------------------------------
Once the extraction is complete you will see a notification window letting you know the extractions is
done.
Click OK - This will close the notification window.
Click OK again - This will close the [Extract ISOs] menu
Click the X in the upper right hand corner - This will close the ZXBtools software.
Congratulations, you have successfully extracted an Xbox iso image!
Step 10 - Cleanup
-------------------------
We now have a little bit of cleanup to do.
Via windows explorer on your PC, navigate to the folder where your .iso image is located.
Example: G:\Sega GT Online\
Because I extracted my iso to the same folder the .iso file was in my structre looks something like
this:
(If you extracted your .iso image to a different folder, you will just see your iso image(s).)
You can see in my structure, I now have the original .iso image, but now we should see some other
files, possibly folders, it really just depends on the game.
At this point, we can delete the .iso file as it's no longer needed.
The main reason we are going to delete this file is because of space.
If we ftp this to our Xbox as it is, it will work, BUT that .iso file is not needed, nor is it
useable, and it will just be taking up extra space on our hard disk. In some cases 3-4GB of space!
Right click on the .iso file and choose Delete.
Confirm the deletion, and the file is gone.
That's it, you can now ftp this folder to the games directory on your Xbox.
Problems / Errors
-------------------------
#1 - Game doesn't show up.
----------------------------------------
Once you ftp the game to the xbox, you have to reboot the console, before the game will show up in the games list.
#2 - The process doesn't work!
------------------------------------------
Sometimes this process does not work.
It's not a flaw in the tutorial, rather a bad .iso image you are working with.
If the game freezes, doesn't load, or simply is buggy or just won't work, the problem is most likely
with your .iso image.
Try to re-download the image, or grab it from a different source.
#3 - Invalid or corrupt iso image error.
---------------------------------------------------
Again, its a bad iso image.
Get another copy. There is nothing you can do to fix this.
#4 - ZXBTools just closes on it's own when I'm adding iso images to the list.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I have had this happen to me before as well.
Again, bad iso image.
The other thing you can try is to only do a few games at a time.
Rather than loading up 25 games at a time to extract, only do them 1 or 2 at a time, until you get
over your problem game.
I have been able to extract 10-15 games at a time without issue.
At other times, loading up 3 games would cause it to crash.
I was able to determine that its not a software problem.
It's more than likely related to a bad .iso image.
Good Luck & Enjoy!
